‘It’s efficient,’ Will said. ‘And breakfast should be the most efficient meal of the day.’

‘Whatever,’ Fiona said with no emotion whatsoever. Today was a Viking day, clearly.

‘We’re going to school, Mum,’ Will shouted over the music.

‘Hang on, Jim Wimple’s toast will be ready in a minute,’ she said, flashing me a smile. Her hips were still wiggling.

Will’s dad walked in just as the toast popped and he grabbed it for himself.

‘Oi, that was for our guest,’ Will’s mum said, slapping him playfully.

Will’s dad didn’t say much. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever heard him properly say anything. He just skulks around and grunts. He kissed Will’s mum goodbye like an emu pecking a fence post, but she didn’t seem to mind. I think Will’s mum had enough bounce and cheeriness for the whole family.

‘Sorry, Jim Wimple, love,’ she said, nodding at Mr Maggot, who was scoffing my toast on his way out. ‘He’s got to get to work. There’s cold pizza in the fridge?’
